This project was a reaction to the overwhelming pace of modern life. Primary research from early in the project revealed that people struggled to find time in their evenings to set time aside for themselves. Eating and preparing meals is the only time of the day that all our senses are engaged. The project heightens this experience to help one slow down and be more mindful.
Solace encompasses a recipe book, a smart speaker and a chopping board. The smart speaker guides the user through a process of cooking that awakens their senses and enables them to slow down. The seasonal recipes were designed in collaboration with chef Ronan Lowther of River Cottage to embody the harmonious process of Solace cooking. The dishes are simple with basic ingredients to highlight the potential of high quality produce. Both Ronan and I wanted people to reconnect with the experience of savouring their food. Ultimately the project utilises cooking as a positive ritual for our health and mental wellbeing.
